The Jaisalmer Fort: The 800-year old Fort of Jaisalmer sits 250 feet above
the city on a triangular hill. Built of yellow sandstone, the fort literally
glistens in the sunlight. From a distance, the Fort looks magical, with its
99 turrets, rising out of the desert haze and looking nearly the same as it
must have centuries ago to the merchants crossing central Asia on overland camel
caravans. Within the walls today are not only the ancient historic buildings,
but also hotels, shops, restaurants, and also the Inicios of nearly a quarter
of Jaisalmer's population.
